Johnny O'Keefe theme

Last night on "A Mixed Bag with Chris B" on 93.7 Edge FM, our theme was the life and music of Johnny O'Keefe.
In 2013 I spoke with the late John "Catfish" Purser, who was JOK's original drummer in Johnny O'Keefe and the Dee Jays.  I was saddened to learn of the recent passing of "Catfish" and thought it would be nice to play some of the interview in memory of the man.

Our playlist for the evening included many songs from Johnny O'Keefe's repertoire - The Wild One, Real Wild Child, I'm Counting on You, She's so Tough, She's my Baby, Move Baby Move, SHOUT (of course!!) and many more. We heard a couple of tracks from the late Billy Thorpe (Most People I know think that I'm Crazy and Over the Rainbow) because JOK was a mentor for Billy Thorpe.

"Catfish" spoke fondly of JOK, and shared his memories of those times spent with the King of Rock and Roll.  To hear snippets of that interview please click on the link below.  There are seven separate interview snippets.

Bob McDonald is the president of the local Parkinson's support group in the Bega Valley.  It was great to catch up with Bob once again, and hear about a very successful Parkinson's Education Seminar recently held at the Bega Valley Commemorative Civic Centre.

In my opinion Bob is a super human, having been living with Parkinson's for 23 years, still playing golf, and providing valuable support for local people.

Photo below is of me (Chris B) having a chat with Bob McDonald.  You can listen by clicking on the link and pressing play once you are in Soundcloud.

Tuesday 22 August 2017

Tonight on A Mixed Bag, local blues man Damon Davies joined us live in the studio.  He started off by joining Garry and Brent on their Boundary Riders program (which you can hear on Tuesdays between 5.00 pm and 6.00 pm on 93.7 Edge FM (if you live in the Bega Valley).
Brent is your full-on country fan.  He likes his Slim Dusty and John Williamson tunes, whereas Garry skirts around and quite often ventures beyond the boundaries of country music.
Damon, Garry and Brent had a great old chin wag.  Here is a photo of Brent and Damon having a chat.

And here is a photo of the Three Amigos, Garry, Brent and Damon

Have a listen to Damon live on air.  He is the silliest serious man I know.

On A Mixed Bag with Chris B, tonight was part 2 of our Davies and Daltrey theme, as in Ray Davies from the kinks, and Roger Daltrey from the Who.  With Damon Davies joining us in the studio, we knew we were in for a fun-filled evening.

Damon talked about the first time he heard himself on the radio, his first gig with his brother in Glebe, playing with the likes of Mic Conway, and why he's not performing as much as he used to.
I asked Damon to join me in singing a song, "Giving it all away" written by Leo Sayer and David Courtney for Roger Daltrey's first album, "Daltrey".  I was a little indulgent tonight, and sang another song called "Oceans Away", a song Roger Daltrey recorded for his album Ride a Rock Horse.

After starting the show with a bang by playing The Who song, "Who are you", and then a gorgeous song from Ray Davies (featuring Jackson Brown) called "Waterloo Sunset", our playlist for the evening included tracks from some of Ray Davies solo albums - "Return to Waterloo" from the only movie Ray Davies wrote and directed, "Is there life after breakfast"from the album Other People's Lives, with the kinks classic tune "You really got me now" featuring Ray Davies and the Crouch End Festival Chorus

We bid Damon goodbye, and heard "Hesitation Blues" from his Wild and Wooly album.  Thank you so much Damon for making tonight's show such a fun-filled episode!

Daltrey & Davies theme

Tune into 93.7 Edge FM on Tuesday evening for our Daltrey & Davies theme (continued).
Last week our playlist included tracks from Roger Daltrey's first solo album simply entitled, "Daltrey", well known songs from The Who and The Kinks, and a little bit of a look at the music of Ray Davies.

I have been out and about in the Bega Valley this week, catching some of the wonderful local cultural events, starting with a visit to the Spiral Gallery to see the "Ways of Speaking" exhibition, and a terrific one-man play written and starring Alex Nicol called Always on Sundays.  To top it all off I went to Wolumla Hall this afternoon to "A Sentimental Journey" performed by Louise Page Soprano) and Pip Candy (piano).  The concert was presented by the Sapphire Coast Music Society and the chosen repertoire included favourites such as Summertime (Porgy and Bess) by George Gershwin, We'll gather lilacs by Ivor Novello and "He was beautiful" by Stanley Myers.  In 2010, Louise was awarded an OAM for service to the performing arts. with a beautiful repertoire.

On Tuesday night, local musician Damon Davies will join Garry & Brent (The Boundary Riders) at the end of their show for a chat, and then stay on to join me on A Mixed Bag with Chris B for some live music on air.

Damon is a multi-instrumentalist extraordinaire, and has been playing around the Bega Valley for many years.
I look forward to catching up with Damon and listening to some fantastic live music.
