Yellow theme

Had a great time on Friday night at Club Sapphire, Merimbula, where the Swamp Stompers entertained a very enthusiastic crowd, playing a mix of blues, funk and rock.  Their latest album, Stepping Stones, is great.  Thanks to Corey Legge from the Swamp Stompers for his interview last week live on A Mixed Bag with Chris B.

As I write this blog I'm listening to "Can-Do Radio".  We had the very talented Andrew Hewitt (Australia's most inspirational drummer) speaking with us on  A Mixed Bag with Chris B a couple of weeks ago, and he told us of his Can-Do Musos radio program.  If you'd like to listen to the Can-Do Radio episode I'm listening to right now, click on the link to hear some fantastic musicians playing music their way.  It's great stuff.

Tomorrow night, Tuesday 16 December 2014, local musician and music producer, Pol O'Shea is coming in to tell us about a great album called "Caressed by mountains" by Yellow Box.  I'm looking forward to spinning a few tunes from the album as the musos listed on the album all seem to have a local connection with the Bega Valley.
Our theme will be "Yellow". So, if you live in the Bega Valley, tune in between 6.00 pm and 8.00 pm tomorrow (Tuesday night)

COREY LEGGE from the Swamp Stompers

Last night on A Mixed Bag with Chris B on 93.7 Edge FM, we had a very special guest in the studio, Corey Legge.  Corey is a member of the Swamp Stompers with fellow band mates Luke Ligtenberg and Mitch Broadhead.  The Swamp Stompers play dirty slide guitar rock and blues with heavy grooves, and they will be launching their new EP, Stepping Stones this Friday night at Club Sapphire, Merimbula, so be there or be square!  Doors open at 8.00 pm and the gig is absolutely free!

Corey was kind enough to come into the Edge FM studios for a chat, and to play a couple of the new songs unplugged.  It's been great for the Bega Valley community to have watched Corey's talent develop over the years, from his early days with TNT, to his solo efforts and now with the wonderful Swamp Stompers.

You can listen to Corey Legge chatting to us about what is happening with the Swamp Stompers, and to hear two "unplugged" versions of the Swamp Stomper songs by clicking on the link below:-

The West Coast sound, that Californian, L.A kind of sound

What a strange night it was tonight.  First of all, when I arrived at the studio, I was stung by a bee, then I had technical problems with the computer, so things didn't go quite according to plan.  I had brought enough cd's and records to play plenty of music with that West Coast, Californian, LA kind of sound - Crosby, Stills and Nash, Joni Mitchell, The Doobie Brothers, Neil Young, Carly Simon and artists of the same vein.
Next week our theme will be "War", so if you live in the Bega Valley, tune into 93.7 Edge FM between 6.00 pm and 8.00 pm.

The drug known as "Ice"

Tonight on A Mixed Bag with Chris B on 93.7 Edge FM, your community radio station in the Bega Valley, we are going to explore the topic of the methamphetamine commonly known as "ice" and find out what this drug is and the effect it has on users, both short-term and long-term.

We will hear songs with the word ice in the title (or ice cream, or icicle), hear some music from Icehouse, and maybe even a few songs from Bjork (because she is from Iceland!)

On a more serious note, we will also be hearing an interview with Jack Nagle from Victoria, who, at a very young age, became addicted to the drug "ice".  Jack is now the Centre Manager at the DayHab Addiction Treatment Centre in Melbourne, helping people with their recovery from addiction.

A Mixed Bag with Chris B goes to air every Tuesday evening between 6.00 pm and 8.00 pm on 93.7 Edge FM, so if you live in the Bega Valley, tune in.

Usually I don't upload interviews until after the show goes to air, but I'm making an exception today because Jack Nagle is so open about his past experience as an ice user, and with the ice epidemic growing, especially in regional and rural areas, I think it's important to hear Jack's message.

To listen to my interview with Jack Nagle, click on the link below:-

There were other song I wanted to include like The Icicle Melts by the Cranberries and a song by Bjork (because she is from Iceland), and a few others about Ice Cream, but we simply ran out of time tonight!

Interview with John York from The Byrds on A Mixed Bag with Chris B on 93.7 Edge FM in the Bega Valley

Tonight on A Mixed Bag with Chris B, I was challenged to find a band better than the Beatles, so I thought it would be interesting to explore the music of The Byrds.  The person who made the challenge decided that you can't compare any band to the Beatles because it's like comparing a Ferrari to a Mazda.  At the end of the day, it's really just a matter of personal opinion, and personally, I prefer The Byrds.

The original members of the Byrds could hear the influence of folk music in the early Beatles tunes, and liked how the band incorporated folk changes with a rock n roll beat.  The two bands certainly were influenced by each other, especially if you listen to the Beatles song "If I needed someone", after listening to the Byrds songs "The Bells of Rhymney" and "She don't care about time".
John York, who was the bass player in the Byrds from 1968 until 1969 very kindly granted me an interview with him.  I found John to be charming and very open about his time with the Byrds.  I've also started listening to some of John York's solo albums, and hope to present a John York theme in the future.

Here's a link to the John York's website: - http://www.johnyorkmusic.com/

NIck Cave theme

Last night on "A Mixed Bag with Chris B", our theme was Nick Cave, an Australian icon, a prolific lyricist, a screen writer, an author, and lead singer of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.  Nick Cave appears to be a family man who leads a "normal" life, happily involved in the lives of his wife and children (twin boys to Susie Bick) a son to Viviane Carneiro, another son to Beau Lazenby.  On the other side of the coin, Nick Cave has created an imaginary world through his writings, a world that is dark, has dark characters, many biblical references and themes of loyalty, betrayal, justice, revenge, and even love.

The music of Linda Ronstadt and exploring the theme of Parkinson's disease

Tonight on A Mixed Bag with Chris B we listened to the music of Linda Ronstadt who was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease last year.  Some of the songs on tonight's playlist were:-
Different drum (The Stone Ponies), Heatwave, Desperado, J.D Souther's Faithless Love, The Eagles Takin' it easy,  It's so easy, I'll be your baby tonight, some songs from the Trio album with Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris (gorgeous harmonies!) and much more.
We learnt about how versatile Linda Ronstadt has been as a vocalist,  with Poor Wandering One from the Pirates of Penzance, a couple of Spanish songs from Canciones de Mi Padre (Corrido DeCanenea and Rocaciaño el Huapangüero) and  and a couple of songs from the album Lush Life with Nelson Riddle and His Orchestra (When I fall In love, and Skylark).  Linda Ronstadt has such a wide repertoire it was impossible to play all her music for the show, but I think we managed to play quite a few favourites.

Bob McDonald lives in Merimbula, on the Far South Coast of New South Wales, and has had Parkinson's disease for 20 years.  Bob maintains a very positive attitude towards the disease.
"I have Parkinson's, Parkinson's does not have me".  To listen to the interview with Bob from tonight's show, please click on the link below.

Thursday 3 April 2014

Last Tuesday night on A Mixed Bag with Chris B, our theme was Heroes.  We played songs about heroes of the silver screen (Elton John's Roy Rodgers), bush ranger heroes (Dr Hook's Wild Colonial Boy), heroes of rock (The Rolling Stones), working class hero songs (John Lennon's Working Class Hero and Jimmy Barnes with Working Class Man), and of course songs with the word Hero or Heroes in the title, David Bowie's Heroes, Bonnie Tyler's I Need A Hero and a song from Aussie band Little Heroes called One Perfect Day.
Chris B is looking for ideas for a theme for the show.  The crazier, the more "left of centre", the better!
If you have any ideas for a theme, please email amixedbagwithchrisb@gmail.com and Chris will choose the best theme, present a show with your theme idea, and of course, you will get all the credit!
For example, one theme idea suggested was Androgynous Singers, and Chris will present this theme on a Mixed Bag next Tuesday night between 6.00 pm and 8.00 pm on 93.7 Edge FM, so if you live in the Bega Valley, tune in.

Tuesday 25 March 2014

Jump!

Tonight on A Mixed Bag with Chris B, our theme was "Jump" and we heard quite a few songs with the word "jump" in the title.  This Saturday, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) will be holding a Jump to Cure Diabetes.  It is the ultimate challenge, where you can face your fears by jumping out of a plane, and raise funds for type 1 diabetes research at the same time!!
The ACT is not that far from the Bega Valley and there will be two opportunities in the ACT to raise money for this very worthwhile cause.  These tandem Skydiving jumps will be held this Saturday 29 March 2014 and the following Saturday 5 April 2014.  You need to be 12 years or over to participate and numbers are limited.
Click on the link below to hear an interview with Mel Eveille from JDRF, and below that, a link to the JDRF website.  If you need more information you can also contact the Canberra JDRF office on 6249 8555.

http://www.jdrf.org.au/jump

Some of the tunes we heard tonight for our "jump" theme were Van Halen's "Jump" (an obvious choice!), Jump for my love by the Pointer Sister's, Jump for joy by Peggy Lee, Jump in my car by Ted Mulray Gang, a couple of songs with a calypso rhythm - Jump in the line (Harry Belafonte) and Jump right in by the Zac Brown Band. Jump, Jive and Wail by the Stray Cats provided us with a little swing music and Taylor Swift's "Jump then fall" and Gary Barlow's beautiful ballad "Jump" highlighted their song writing abilities.  Of course, the Rolling Stones had to be included with everyone's favourite, Jumpin' Jack Flash!

Next week, our theme will be "Heroes", so if you live in the Bega Valley, tune into 93.7 Edge FM between 6.00 pm and 8.00 pm for "A Mixed Bag with Chris B".

Having just returned from a trip overseas I thought presenting a theme about travel would be a good way to ease my way back into the show after a bit of a break.
I'd like to ask for suggestions for future themes for a Mixed Bag with Chris B, the stranger or more obscure the better.  So, please put on your thinking caps and see if you can come up with any ideas.  The person who comes up with the best idea (most original) will have the honour of having a show dedicated to them and their theme.  I will give you more details of how to contact next week, but have a think about it in the meantime.

Tonight's playlist included the following songs:-

A watery theme on a Mixed Bag last night

Last night on a Mixed Bag with Chris B, we had a watery kind of theme.  The playlist was made up of songs with the word sea, ocean, beach, harbour and other water based tunes, including Bridge Over Troubled Water, It Never Rains In California, Zeno Beach, The Sea, Smoke On The Water, Down By Harbour Lights, Night Swimming, Swimming, Deep Water, Blue Bay Blues and Take Me To The River.
Last weekend I went to the Thredbo Blues Festival.  It was great to catch acts like Minnie Marks, Jesse Valach and Blues Mountain, Doggin It, Jungal and Ray Beadle. At the end of the show last night we heard a couple of tracks from artists who played at the festival.  Wendy Matthews was a highlight for me and below are a couple of photos from the weekend.

Silverchair

Tonight's theme on A Mixed Bag with Chris B was Silverchair, and we played lots of tracks from Frogstomp, Freakshow, Neon Ballroom, Diorama and Young Modern.  It was interesting to find out about their music, their lives and the band's history and realise how the band grew artistically from their grungy youthful angst reflected on Frogstomp to the grand orchestral arrangements on Diorama and the more poppy Young Modern album.  So much has been achieved and still so young!
Of course they aren't playing together at the moment after their "indefinite hibernation" announcement in 2011.
Next week our theme on a Mixed Bag with Chris B will have something to do with Swimming, Diving, Pools, the Ocean - somthing like that!  Haven't quite worked it out yet.

Tuesday 7 January 2014

2014 is here!

I'm not sure where the years are going, but I can't believe it's now 2014.  After a short break over the Christmas period, A Mixed Bag with Chris B returned tonight with a Calendar Months theme - January, February, March etc.
The playlist looked something like this:-
Calendar Girl - Neil Sedaka
January - Pilot
January Hymn - The Decemberists
February Song - Josh Groban
Ides of March - Iron Maiden
April She Will Come - Simon & Garfunkle
Stormy May Day - AC/DC
Stairway to Heaven - Led Zepplin (you know that line about the May Queen?)
June is a Comin' - Dana Lyons
June is bustin' out all over (Carousel)
July 4th - Bruce Sprinsteen
Cold Day in July - Dixie Chicks
A couple of songs from Neil Diamond's "Hot August Night" album
September - Earth Wind and Fire
October Song - Amy Winehouse
November Rain - Guns N Roses
We ran out of time for December unfortunately!
Next week on Tuesday night between 6.00 pm and 8.00 pm it will be a Silverchair theme.
